The Declaration of Faith
The Shahadah is the first and most fundamental pillar of Islam. It is the declaration of faith that serves as the foundation of a Muslim's belief and identity. By sincerely uttering these words, a person testifies to the oneness of Allah and accepts Muhammad ﷺ as His final messenger.
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّٰهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰهِ
Ash-hadu an lā ilāha illā Allāh, wa ash-hadu anna Muḥammadan rasūlu Allāh
"I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."
This first part of the Shahadah declares the absolute oneness of Allah (Tawheed). It negates the existence of any deity worthy of worship except Allah alone. This statement affirms that Allah is the only Creator, Sustainer, and Controller of all that exists.
The second part testifies that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is Allah's final messenger to all of humanity. It means accepting his message, following his teachings, and believing that he conveyed the complete and final revelation from Allah.
For the Shahadah to be valid and accepted, it must be accompanied by seven essential conditions:
Understanding the meaning of the Shahadah and what it requires.
Having complete conviction in its truth without any doubt.
Accepting what the Shahadah entails with the heart and tongue.
Complying with and acting upon its requirements.
Being truthful in declaring it, both outwardly and inwardly.
Declaring it purely for the sake of Allah, seeking His pleasure alone.
Loving this declaration, what it stands for, and acting accordingly.
The Shahadah is the entry point into Islam. Upon sincerely declaring it, a person becomes a Muslim and enters the fold of Islam. It is the testimony that distinguishes a believer from a non-believer.
It establishes the core beliefs upon which all other Islamic teachings are built. Every act of worship and aspect of a Muslim's life stems from this fundamental declaration.
Muslims recite the Shahadah multiple times daily in their prayers and at various occasions, constantly renewing their faith and commitment to Allah and His messenger.
فَاعْلَمْ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ
"So know [O Muhammad] that there is no deity except Allah..."
— Surah Muhammad (47:19)If you wish to embrace Islam, you can do so by sincerely declaring the Shahadah with conviction in your heart. It is recommended to do so in the presence of witnesses, but it is valid even if declared alone.
After taking the Shahadah, it is encouraged to perform ghusl (full body purification), learn how to pray, and begin studying the basic teachings of Islam.
