The Purification of Wealth - Third Pillar of Islam
Zakat is the obligatory charity given by Muslims who meet the minimum threshold of wealth (Nisab). It is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and serves to purify one's wealth while supporting those in need. Zakat is 2.5% of savings and eligible assets held for one lunar year.
وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ
"And establish prayer and give Zakat..."
— Surah Al-Baqarah (2:43)Zakat is obligatory only upon Muslims who have reached the age of maturity.

The wealth must be in your possession for a complete lunar year (354 days).

The Quran specifies eight categories of people entitled to receive Zakat:
Those who have little to no wealth or means of income.
Those whose income doesn't meet their basic needs.
Those employed to collect and distribute Zakat.
New Muslims or those inclined towards Islam.
Those in bondage or slavery.
People burdened by overwhelming debt.
Those striving for the cause of Islam.
Travelers in need of assistance to reach their destination.
Zakat becomes due after one lunar year (Hawl) of possessing wealth above the Nisab threshold. You should calculate and pay Zakat on your personal anniversary date.
Many Muslims prefer to pay Zakat during Ramadan to maximize rewards, though it can be paid anytime after the Hawl is complete. Some scholars allow advancing Zakat payment before the year ends.
Delaying Zakat payment after it becomes due is not permissible except in cases of genuine hardship. Set a reminder for your Zakat date and fulfill this obligation promptly.
Zakat purifies and blesses your remaining wealth.
Bridges the gap between rich and poor in society.
Develops generosity and removes love of materialism.
Allah multiplies the reward for those who give.
